Grey is not boring: since late summer 2018, the architectural fire brick slips manufactured by Ströher especially for this project have accentuated the façade of the luxurious residential complex at Jarrestraße 58 in Hamburg over an area of around 1,600 square metres.

With a little imagination, the lively texture of our architectural brand in shades ranging from silk grey to smoky black-grey is reminiscent of iridescent fish skin. The fish in the neighbouring Osterbek Canal probably don't mind the unusual appearance, but the ecological enhancement brought about by the new building does. For many years, the finned fish had literally been looking foolish: the laundry located there had been pouring chemicals into the sewerage system for decades until 1992, causing long-term pollution of the groundwater. That is now a thing of the past: Following extensive and costly renovation of the 3,800 square metre site, the ‘Jarre 58’ residential ensemble now shines in its place.

Based on plans by Hamburg-based Henke + Partner Architekten, the construction company Otto Wulff built 64 condominiums with two to four rooms and living spaces ranging from 60 to a generous 165 square metres. The contaminated soil was replaced with new soil to a depth of up to six metres. The costs totalled around five million euros. That's no mean feat, even considering the project volume of over 37 million euros. However, the result that now stands on the fresh soil is impressive across the board.

Designed as a KfW Efficiency House 70, the new five-storey building in the heart of the Winterhude district is accessed via five entrances from a green inner courtyard. The entrance to the underground car park with 64 parking spaces and just as many charging stations for electric cars is also located here. Floor-to-ceiling windows, rounded building edges and, above all, the aforementioned Ströher façade with its finely contoured brick look make the residential complex an attractive and healthy place to live for its residents. This also pleases the fish.
