Admittedly: With ‘Fünf Morgen Dahlem Urban Village’, the project developers have come up with a somewhat unwieldy name for their commercial and residential project. However, the long-established Zehlendorf residents in the well-off south-west of the metropolis probably don't care: In the vernacular, the neighbourhood where Berliners used to celebrate the ‘German-American Folk Festival’ still bears the name ‘Truman Plaza’. Instead of entertaining fun, the area now offers Mediterranean living flair, state-of-the-art comfort and timeless, appealing architecture.

Just over a hundred metres to the east of Berlin's famous Grunewald forest and its chain of lakes, the ‘Fünf Morgen Apartments’ were built on a 5,300 m² site to a design by KSP Jürgen Engel Architekten. The new ‘village in the city’ consists of five individual buildings, each with 79 residential units on three or four storeys, as well as nine commercial units and a daycare centre. With large windows and spacious balconies and roof terraces, the loft-style flats are ideally suited to families and offer exceptional living flair.

The high quality of the flat fittings is reflected from afar in the harmonious mix of materials used in the facade architecture: while the base storey is clad in travertine, sand-beige clinker brick slips from Ströher adorn the upper storeys and the staggered storey, which is set back on two sides. The KSP architects accentuated the storey ceilings with horizontal, white cornice bands. As three-dimensional projections, they lend plasticity to the facade and, in conjunction with the symmetrically arranged window areas, create a harmoniously proportioned, pleasantly ‘grounded’ view of the building.

The planners achieved a particularly expressive, lively appearance of the clinker brick surfaces by choosing various slender brick slip formats, which were laid in format combinations in a wild bond. In order to match the colour and feel of the clinker brick slips as precisely as possible to the natural stone cladding, Ströher, as a brick slip specialist, produced a special series according to project-specific requirements. On the facade of the ‘Fünf Morgen Apartments’, the brick slips prove that clinker brick not only offers interesting and individual façade design options ‘on its own’, but also in combination with other facade materials. For this concept, the Ströher range offers a variety of colour gradations as well as firing and glaze effects with a wide range of expressions. Last but not least, architects and planners receive sound advice on all functional and installation-related questions regarding facade design with clinker brick slips.
