All's well that ends well - what works in Hollywood also applies to the ‘never-ending story’ of one of Hamburg's most famous construction sites. After more than ten years, residents and visitors to the St. Georg district have been relieved of the sight of a huge excavation pit on Adenauerallee, seemingly abandoned to its fate. From an urban planning perspective, the wait was worth it, as the renowned Hamburg office Störmer Murphy and Partners developed a concept for a combined hotel and residential use for the site - which is now one of the architectural highlights in the trendy neighbourhood.

The congenial solution to the challenging planning requirements: A 55 metre high residential tower, which offers a total of 113 residential units on 17 floors, rests visually on a seven-storey block, which is now home to the Courtyard by Mariott hotel with 277 rooms. The two almost ‘Siamese’ interlocking structures echo the high-rise buildings on Adenauerallee and at the same time create a harmonious transition to the neighbouring, significantly lower neighbourhood development thanks to the lower transverse block.

The architects not only sensitively integrated the new building complex into the urban context through the building structures and heights, but also through the design of the façade: ‘The residential tower with its façade of light-coloured natural stone cladding, harmoniously complemented by vertically laid clinker brick slips and balconies with printed glass balustrades, is a landmark that can be seen from afar,’ emphasises Holger Jaedicke, partner at Störmer Murphy and Partners. ‘Through the choice of colours and materials, we created a reference to the neighbouring buildings, in particular the travertine façade of the listed administrative building from the 1950s opposite.’

For those interested in architecture, it is therefore worth taking a closer look at the outer shell of the two buildings: The upper storeys of the residential tower are adorned with small-format travertine slabs, some of which are cut at an angle, giving it a lively and ‘light’ appearance. The colour-coordinated architectural brick slips from Ströher, based on the 1975 austerrauch product, which clad the façade of the block building, provide an exciting contrast. On the one hand, the appearance of the material and the subtle colour nuances of the clinker brick ‘ground’ the transverse structure of the twin building; on the other hand, the ultra-slim 400 x 35 mm long format in combination with the unconventional vertical laying of the facade creates a fascinating elegance in the form of a ‘pinstripe’ effect.
